Need for Extending Broadband Access to Rural Areas

The Commission for Rural Communities has published a new report named ‘Mind the Gap – Digital England, a rural perspective’ which criticises the Digital Britain report on many points and recommends that the rural areas should also have access to broadband connections.

The CRC report criticises the Digital Britain report’s target of providing broadband connections with 2Mb speed all over the country. According to the report, this should not be the only target and importance should also be given to providing broadband access to rural parts of the country. If you require more information on broadband and on the services of ISP’s in your area, click on broadband providers UK for a broadband comparison.

The second ground on which the CRC report criticises the government’s plan of actions is that the broadband tax of 50p a month, which has been levied on the consumers of broadband connections, will not be enough for funding the whole project of upgrading broadband networks.

The CRC report has made many suggestions regarding the exact steps that can be taken to develop rural broadband infrastructure. The report has specifically recommended promotion of community based broadband schemes.

The community based broadband schemes are slowly becoming popular in the country. There are some 40 such schemes being implemented in different parts of the country. The Independent Networks Co-operative Association has been formed as representative of all these schemes.
